There’s a particular breed of sheep up in Switzerland known as the Valaise Blacknose. They’re incredibly darkskinned animals, which thick wool growing all over. They’re bred for the wool, but what makes them so special is that it’s such a stark contrast between fur and skin. Even their faces are extremely dark fur, which kind of makes them look like goth sheep wearing white clothes.
Because of their rather unusually colored faced for Sheeps, they’ve got a strange presence. Some people, for good reason, find them scary, while others, for different reasons, find them adorable.
Maybe the reason why people think these sheep are terrifying is the same reason why people think ravens are messengers of death. That they are nature’s signal to run, to escape and protect oneself. It’s weird how human beings evolve with different reactions to different things, but these sheep certainly fall under one of those categories of weird reactions.
Another reason why these sheep have such a split audience is probably because they are not very common. It’s not usual to see a sheep with wool a different colour than its skin, and because of its scarcity, it makes it special. You just don’t see sheep like these very often anywhere else, they’re quite limited to the mountains of Switzerland from where they were taken to areas like Scotland.
